Wanted

This hateful, puerile movie about an organization of contract killers is nothing but a stylized butcher shop. Someone should tell director Timur Bekmambetov that no matter how many slow-motion bullets or booby-trapped rats (no, I’m not kidding) you film, trash is still trash.

The Incredible Hulk

Like Robert Downey, Jr. in Iron Man, this comic book adaptation is anchored by a serious actor in the lead role, namely an excellent Edward Norton as Dr. Bruce Banner. Add to that a ferocious pace and some bitchin’ battle scenes and you’ve got an unexpected (but welcome) summer delight.

The Happening

As a major M. Night Shyamalan fan, it’s sad to report that The Happening is a major disappointment. Even though the premise of vengeful foliage trying to liquidate mankind is quite tantalizing, the film feels short, rushed and, well … just not scary.

Reprise

A Norwegian film (with English subtitles) about 20-somethings in contemporary Oslo coping with love, literature, mental illness and bourgeois society. The movie’s arty style evokes the alert, cool, nervous feel of urban youth.

You’ll laugh, sigh and cry as Carrie Bradshaw and friends continue their Cinderella fantasies of fashion and romance in New York City. Not since The Simpsons Movie have I seen a TV show so faithfully transferred to the big screen.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

The elements that were fun and exciting in the first Indiana Jones movie have turned into expectations to be fulfilled in the sequels. Although this movie is entertaining and perfectly well made, let’s hope that director Steven Spielberg and actor Harrison Ford make it the end of the series.

Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr. is hilarious as a lovable rascal who can do it all – score with the gals and build crazy cool stuff in the garage. Even as he develops a social conscience and falls in love, Downey makes this otherwise ordinary superhero movie a lot of fun.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

By admin On June 16th, 2008 in Mark's Review /

Yeah, yeah, I know … it’s great to see Harrison Ford slip on the fedora and swing from the rafters with his whip again, but Spielberg and Lucas bring absolutely nothing new to this fourth installment of the Indiana Jones series. Even with 27 years of the advances in special effects, this tired sequel is a far cry from the sheer joy and wonder of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Shotgun Stories

It starts as a frankly depressing look at Arkansas rednecks who are so repressed and reticent they could be made of stone. But stick with it – first-time writer/director Jeff Nichols and lead actor Michael Shannon deliver a powerful movie about authentic and uncompromising characters.
