The Dark Knight

By admin On July 28th, 2008 in Bill's Review /

Unlike most of this summer’s movie superheroes (Iron Man, Hulk, Hellboy), the Caped Crusader is strictly business, so all the appeal has to come from the eye-popping special effects and juicy villains. I think that’s a problem — all work and no play makes Batman a dull superhero.

Mamma Mia!

By admin On July 28th, 2008 in Mark's Review /

I saw the scariest film of 2008 yesterday … and it was Mamma Mia! The sight of Meryl Streep in overalls jumping on a bed to the tune of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” was frightening enough, but hearing Pierce Brosnan sing “SOS” sent me hiding under my seat bleating in terror.

The Dark Knight

So sorry to fart in the bathtub of praise this film is getting, but The Dark Knight is far from perfect — it’s a full 40 minutes too long, the story is a confusing train wreck and the ending is joyless, illogical and unsatisfying. What’s worse, director Christopher Nolan has invented a new editing technique in this movie — end every scene by blowing something up.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army

By admin On July 21st, 2008 in Bill's Review /

Writer/director Guillermo del Toro’s special-effects spectacular emphasizes not the plot (it’s hooey anyway) but, as in the first Hellboy, his wild cast of characters. Two examples: Hellboy is a lovable, blue-collar lug, and Johann Krauss, a robot with a head like a vapor-filled popcorn popper, is exasperating but warm-hearted.

WALL-E

By admin On July 14th, 2008 in Bill's Review /

The start of the film, where we meet the lonely robot WALL-E on the desolate future Earth, is so terrific it more than makes up for the fairly conventional story that follows. What the geniuses at Pixar Studios are doing for animation in movies today is what Fred Astaire did for dancing in movies 70 years ago.

The Visitor

By admin On July 7th, 2008 in Bill's Review /

When an apathetic college professor allows two young immigrants to stay in his apartment, they bring passion back into his life. Writer/director Thomas McCarthy tells a simple, quiet (if anything, too quiet) story that draws you in and fills your heart.

WALL-E

By admin On July 7th, 2008 in Mark's Review /

GOOD NEWS for all you poor movie lovers who have had to endure this summer’s long trail of Hollywood caca — WALL-E is a little bit of heaven come to earth. This story of a robot left to clean up a deserted planet is so brilliantly conceived and so charmingly told, you leave the theater with stars in your eyes.

Get Smart

By admin On July 7th, 2008 in Mark's Review /

Just a note to all those involved in producing the Get Smart movie — if you’re going to remake one of the best TV comedies of the ’60s, you may want to actually MAKE IT FUNNY! I laughed more at my last dental appointment than anytime during this sour, unfocused and totally forgettable mess.
