Pineapple Express

Seth Rogen and James Franco play stoned chuckleheads who stumble through this violent crime caper like a pair of Mr. Magoos, blithely escaping calamity and constantly muttering funny comments as the bullets fly. It’s one of the better comedies from the Judd Apatow factory.

Bottle Shock

The true story of the famous 1976 Paris wine-tasting competition in which an American chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon beat dozens of snooty French vintages, Bottle Shock is a rare adult treat in a summer of kiddie crap. Patiently told and perfectly cast, this film will fascinate even the strictest teetotaler.

I walked into this movie expecting to hate it, but Pineapple Express is so original, unpredictable and completely unhinged, it quickly won me over. But be warned if you’re the parent of a teen — the movie’s wide-eyed glorification of drugs and murder earns it a solid “R.”

Vicky Cristina Barcelona

Woody Allen has done something completely unexpected with his latest film — he bored me. Vicky Cristina Barcelona features three of the most dreary lead characters Allen has ever written, all of them wandering around Barcelona worrying about their feelings.
