W.

Josh Brolin’s brassy yet brilliant portrayal of the 43rd president makes W. a much better film than it has any right being. Despite director Oliver Stone’s continual attempts to caricature Bush, Brolin’s performance is so deep and full, it transcends all the partisan sniping and presents W. as just an ordinary guy who gets in way over his head.

Tell No One

By admin On October 13th, 2008 in Bill's Review /

This terrific thriller, in French with English subtitles, is about a pediatrician who is suspected of killing his wife eight years earlier. With its surprising plot turns, focus on an “everyman” character, pervasive tension and lack of special effects, Tell No One will remind you of classic Hitchcock films.

Appaloosa

By admin On October 13th, 2008 in Mark's Review /

With a well-defined hero, a trusty sidekick and bad guys so evil they literally pee on the saloon floor, westerns don’t get as straightforward and square-shouldered as director Ed Harris’ Appaloosa. Whether this is a good thing or not is up to the viewer, but I like a bit of irony in my shoot-’em-ups.

Flash of Genius

By admin On October 6th, 2008 in Mark's Review /

The true story of Robert Kearns, a brittle, obsessed Detroit inventor who sued Ford for stealing his design for the intermittent windshield wiper, Flash of Genius is probably too true to life — you literally feel every day of the 14 years he spent trying to get the auto giant before a jury. When the courtroom scenes finally come, the viewer is as shredded and numb as the real Kearns and his family probably were.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

By admin On October 6th, 2008 in Bill's Review /

Bravo, Film Streams, for bringing this 1921 silent film classic to Omaha, even if it’s only for a short run during the October “Film Screams!” series of horror movies. This is over-the-top campy German expressionism with a creepy core: Could a man who has slept for 23 years foretell the future?

Choke

By admin On October 1st, 2008 in Bill's Review /

The hero of this dark, quirky, racy comedy is a sex addict who works in a colonial theme park and pretends to choke on food at restaurants in order to scam the wealthy patrons who “rescue” him. Choke is only so-so, but it’s refreshing to see a movie cheerfully violate so many boundaries of good taste and polite society.
