Doubt

Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman nearly set the movie theater curtains on fire in this searing film version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play about a rigid nun who suspects her parish priest is a pedophile. There isn’t an actor or actress in this movie who doesn’t give an Oscar-worthy performance — simply amazing.

Valkyrie

Bryan Singer’s new film about the July 20, 1944 plot by German generals to kill Hitler tries with all its might to be a gripping thriller, but since the audience knows the outcome before we buy our popcorn, Valkyrie never really gets up a head of steam. On the positive side, Tom Cruise puts aside all his usual irritating acting tics and gives one of the better performances of his career.

Slumdog Millionaire

This rags-to-riches tale, set in India, catches you up in its imaginative, colorful storytelling. Afterward you realize you’ve been fed one of the corniest, most improbable story lines in the history of the movies, but it sure was a fun ride.

The Day the Earth Stood Still

In terms of storytelling and sheer filmcraft, this flashy remake is far inferior to Robert Wise’s brilliant 1951 original. But I would be lying if I said this new version didn’t deliver a few genuine thrills — the first appearance of the terrifying alien robot, Gort, will make you wet yourself.

Cadillac Records

If you’re a fan of Chess Records artists like Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry and Etta James, you have to see this movie. I don’t know if all the details of the Chicago-based record label are accurate, but the acting is terrific, the story is compelling (racial issues are not avoided), and the music – well, I only wish there was more of it.

Synecdoche, New York

By admin On December 1st, 2008 in Bill's Review /

Charlie Kaufman, who has written such challenging movies as Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, wrote and directed this head trip about a theater director whose lifework intertwines with his actual life. It’s self-indulgent and confusing, but in the understandable parts, it’s also funny, touching and exciting.

Role Models

By admin On December 1st, 2008 in Mark's Review /

What starts out as a Superbad-style teen romp quickly becomes a clever riff on friendship, family and, believe it or not, fantasy role-playing games. Role Models certainly isn’t classic comedy, but there are enough genuine laughs to get you through two hours.
