The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Remember how, in Groundhog Day, the gimmick of a man who constantly relives one day of his life was essential to the plot and helped make it a great movie? In Benjamin Button, the gimmick of a man who grows younger instead of older has no real point, other than giving the makeup department a chance to win an Oscar for their work on Brad Pitt.

Gran Torino

Clint Eastwood directs and stars as a racist old coot who lives in a dangerous neighborhood protecting his car, a restored 1972 Gran Torino, and his fast-fading way of life. It’s not a great movie, but it’s a pure Clint Eastwood movie, and when it comes to facing up to villains the old guy (he’s 78) still has what it takes.

The Wrestler

I’m pleased to report that the hype surrounding Mickey Rourke’s performance in this film is all true — he deserves to win the Oscar free and clear for his tender, heartsick portrayal of a crumbling professional wrestler who has nothing left but his final match. What’s so remarkable about Rourke’s work here is that he makes the viewer feel every ache of his broken body and his broken heart.
