It’s like clockwork that’s funny: DreamWorks Animation (Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, the Shrek movies) has manufactured another computer-animated comedy that dependably delivers clever pop-culture references and zany characters (you’ll love B.O.B., voiced by Seth Rogen). For best results, pay the extra couple of bucks to watch it in 3-D.

Watchmen checks all the boxes in the mini-genre of films based on dark graphic novels: The special effects are operatic, the characters are neurotic, the plot is melodramatic, the social message is adolescent, the violence is pornographic and the ending is apocalyptic. Cool music too.

Waltz with Bashir

Writer/director Ari Folman records the voices of former Israeli soldiers struggling to recall their 1982 war experiences and uses unique animation techniques to portray the haunted veterans and their dreams. It’s a powerful movie (nominated for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar), but be ready for disturbing and maybe even gross-out images of war.
