April Showers

By admin On April 27th, 2009 in Bill's Review /

This indie tear-jerker focuses on the emotional repercussions of a school shooting. It has immediacy because a) the writer-director is a survivor of the Columbine tragedy, b) the movie was shot at Plattsmouth High School and several Omaha locations, and c) the portrayal of high school life, with all its hormones, emotions and awkwardness, is completely convincing.

Observe and Report

In all my years at the movies, I’ve never seen a film with as much contempt for the audience as the bizarre and hateful comedy Observe and Report — at times, it seems as if the characters would happily jump off the screen and slit your throat. The usually harmless Seth Rogan plays a closet psycho who comes across like Travis Bickle at the Improv.

Observe and Report

This movie starts out as a darker, R-rated Paul Blart: Mall Cop, then loses its way as the characters become inconsistent and the plot incoherent. A comedy can survive bad taste and sick humor, but if it doesn’t make sense it can’t be funny.

Knowing

By mcarpenter On April 7th, 2009 in Mark's Review /

The first half of this wildly uneven psychic thriller is chock-full of creepy fun, but the last 30 minutes make you want to throw your Junior Mints at the screen and bum-rush the ticket counter for a refund. Bottom line, Knowing has one of the lamer endings in recent memory.

I Love You, Man

By mcarpenter On April 7th, 2009 in Mark's Review /

This fresh, funny story of a hopelessly square realtor trying to find male friends would go down a lot easier without all the smutty (often loathsome) toilet humor that infuses this film. Someone should tell director John Hamburg that there’s nothing amusing about a father commenting on how much pubic hair his teen son has.

Adventureland

By admin On April 6th, 2009 in Bill's Review /

Far from the raunchy romp you might expect from the director of Superbad, this is a shrewd love story about recent college graduates spending the summer of 1987 working in a low-budget amusement park called Adventureland. If you have someone you really care about, this would be a pretty cool date movie.
