Angels & Demons

The plot of this film is truly a mess of Biblical proportions, but somehow director Ron Howard distills it down into a fairly coherent thriller. If you can hold your nose through all the secret-hidden-symbols-across-Rome crapola, Angels & Demons is moderately enjoyable.

Star Trek

Even if you don’t know a Klingon from a Vulcan, you’ll like this well-crafted space adventure, with special effects that are strong but don’t overwhelm the story. If you do remember the 1960s TV series, you will love the way this movie revives the spirit of the original, with its engaging interplay of characters, sly humor and “fascinating” (as Spock would say) tension between logic and emotion.

Despite giddy reviews by most critics, J.J. Abrams’ reboot of the Star Trek franchise misses the mark by light years. The director simply doesn’t understand what made the original series so great: stories based on big ideas that were elegantly told — this is an anonymous laser shoot-’em-up with all the complexity of Milk Duds.

The Great Buck Howard

By admin On May 4th, 2009 in Bill's Review /

John Malkovich hams it up as Buck Howard, an over-the-hill “mentalist” modeled on the Amazing Kreskin, whose career has sunk from appearing regularly on network TV to playing half-empty auditoriums in Bakersfield. A story that could have been snarky and mean is turned into a funny, warm-hearted show biz fable.
