Fantastic Mr. Fox

By admin On November 30th, 2009 in Bill's Review /

What a fun and funny movie! Director Wes Anderson manages to make the stop-motion-animation technique seem spontaneous and off-the-cuff, and George Clooney, starring as the voice of Mr. Fox, combines the charm of his Ocean’s Eleven and the comedy of his O Brother, Where Art Thou performances.

An Education

An excellent screenplay, superb actors and a convincing setting in 1960s London make this improbable story (schoolgirl falls for older man) a compelling and satisfying movie, filled with dramatic tension. Teachers especially will enjoy this gem.

2012

Watching director Roland Emmerich’s new weapon of mass destruction, 2012, is like riding the newest, biggest, most technically-advanced roller coaster at Six Flags — it’s loud, stupid fun. Yeah, yeah, I know this is the cinematic equivalent of empty calories, but c’mon, in what other movie will you ever see a mile-high tidal wave roll over the Himalayas?

Where the Wild Things Are

By admin On November 24th, 2009 in Bill's Review /

I loved the high-tech-meets-deep-shag look of this movie, and I thoroughly enjoyed the eccentric personalities of the Wild Things, who say things like, “Can it, Ira, everybody’s eyeballs feel loose.” But I disliked the lame ending, and I thought Max was a momma’s boy who needed to have momma smack him one.

A Serious Man

By admin On November 16th, 2009 in Bill's Review /

The dark humor of the Coen brothers gets darker than ever in this grotesque portrayal of a middle class Jewish community in Minnesota in 1967. The story, a sort of retelling of the Book of Job, focuses on a math professor whose life is on a seriously downward trajectory.

Paranormal Activity

A couple set up a camera and microphone in their bedroom to record the things that are going bump in the night, and what they find out is deeply creepy. When so many fright flicks depend on special effects and computer-generated bloodbaths, it’s great that a low-budget movie like this can still scare your pants off by engaging your imagination.

The Box

By mcarpenter On November 9th, 2009 in Mark's Review /

The Box hits a new low for movies — it manages to be stupid, offensive, manipulative, sexist, tasteless and unintelligible all at the same time. It reminded me of one of those made-for-TV flicks on SyFy with Dean Cain and a giant catfish, except not as entertaining.

Where the Wild Things Are

I’ll give director Spike Jonze this much — his film adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s classic children’s book is certainly a singular vision, it’s also a total bummer. The movie is so exceedingly sad, they should give out Xanax as you leave the theater.

Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant

By admin On November 2nd, 2009 in Bill's Review /

Based on a series of young adult novels by Darren Shan, this movie follows the adventures of a 16-year-old boy growing up in a shadowy, supernatural world where, for example, nice vampires feud with nasty vampanese. I thought it was basically a low-rent Harry Potter, but if you really love vampires, you might want to take a look.
