How could the German people – a civilized, advanced culture – give rise to Hitler and the horrors of the Third Reich? Writer/director Michael Haneke, working in black and white with subtitles, suggests the answer by showing us the outwardly normal but inwardly brutal inhabitants of a German village in the months leading up to World War I.
