Film noir puts on a blue collar and gets nasty in this flick about adultery, arson, murder and blackmail, set around a construction site in Australia. Although the ending is a dud and the down-under dialect is hard to follow, the characters are believable, the plotting is tight and the atmosphere is suspenseful.

The Iron Man franchise has solved the main problem with superhero movies: How do you make the good guy as interesting as the bad guy? Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark/Iron Man, besides being an athlete and computer genius, is a raving egomaniac who’s only slightly less sociopathic than his villains (Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell), and that edginess (plus Downey’s talent) is what makes Iron Man 2 such a fun ride.

City Island

This indie comedy, set on a tiny island (part of the Bronx) in Long Island Sound, shows a dysfunctional family whose layers of deception unravel before their eyes. The script is clever, with some witty and wise moments, but I was never convinced by Andy Garcia as the working-class father.
