Super Bowl Commercials – $2.8 million down the tubes?

Yes, I will shush you during commercials, especially during the Super Bowl – the holy grail of television advertising. With a cost of nearly $100,000 per second of airtime, a lot is riding on how effective and memorable your creative masterpiece will be. So what makes a great Super Bowl spot? Deadly Doritos to the neck? Stripping supermodels? A bungalow built out of Bud Light? The answer lies in your ad-crammed cerebrum. Advertisers are betting $2.8 million that you will remember their brand. Which means that if you remember the “Betty White” commercial, a chunk of change just went down the rat hole. If you remember the “Snickers” commercial with Betty White, pop the champagne corks. Sadly, I think this year’s crop of creative concepts was mostly forgettable. How about you? Can you recall five commercials and the brands associated with them from the Super Bowl? Here’s what I remember.

Greg Ahrens’ Top 5 Memorable Super Bowl Commercials

  1. VW’s “Punch Dub” (Brought back childhood memories.)
  2. Coca-Cola “Simpsons” (Just cuz I  like the Simpsons.)
  3. TruTV “Polamalu” (Creepy, yes. But in a cool way.)
  4. HomeAway “Chevy Chase Vacation” (I can relate.)
  5. Coca-Cola “African Sleepwalker” (Beautiful cinematography and kept me engaged.)
