A recent study by Outsell shows that advertisers plan to spend 32.5% of their $368 billion budgets on digital media. That’s $8 billion more than print. Is it a coincidence that another Arbitron Inc. survey indicates that more Americans would give up their TV connection if forced to choose between it and their Internet? Probably not.
Digital’s rise to the top has been a long time coming. As newspapers and magazines worldwide have thrown in the towel, new Web sites and blogs pop up every day. Although the numbers currently show a close race between digital and print, we only can assume that the gap will widen as digital media continue to revolutionize the world.
So is it time to stick a fork in full-page spreads and make way for search engine marketing? Not necessarily. Print advertising will continue to have a strong presence in the marketplace. In fact, Outsell’s study indicates that magazine spending will rise in 2010. But it’s important that elements like online banner ads, social media and Web sites are included – and are oftentimes the feature – in any campaign.
